‘Circus Lane in the Sun’
Nestled between The New Town and Stockbridge in Edinburgh, Circus Lane was voted, a few years ago, ‘The Most Beautiful Street in Edinburgh‘.
It wasn’t always like this:-
As the prime mover in the transformation described it
The 9-feet wide cobbled lane had no footpath, two-way traffic using it as a shortcut at an averge of 25mph, a plethora of run-down buildings fixed with plastic windows and corrugated roofing.
You could just about discern it was the remnants of a Georgian set of modest dwellings.
The street was a forgotten rat run, council ignored since the Forties.
By 2010 it had full conservation status.
Local writer and bogger (and former resident) ‘Grouse Beater’ has written an account of what happened, complete with ‘before and after’ photos. It’s a great read, with its own lessons too!
