We could not be more proud
ASH BARTY, Wimbledon champion 2021. How good is that! We feel emotionally exhausted after watching the match on delay this morning. It was so tense and we so much wanted this wonderful woman and athlete to win. Tears streamed down our faces when she did. It reminded us of the extraordinary night that Cathy Freeman won the 400m Olympic gold medal in 2000 in Sydney.
I remember very clearly watching another extraordinary indigenous woman, Evonne Goolagong, win Wimbledon against Margaret Court in 1971. On that occasion, being 50 years younger, I stayed up to watch the match in the early hours of the morning.
We couldn't be more proud of Ash, not just just because of her athletic prowess and tennis brain but because of the person that she is.
Thank you Ash and Evonne and Cathy.
We have been tennis tragics for ever. We bought this bag when we visited Wimbledon on 5 September 1989.
