Two Little Dickie Birds ...

... sitting on a branch. One named Carduelis, one named Chloris.

They're both from the finch family and have strong bills for opening seeds. The goldfinch gets it name Carduelis carduelis from the Latin for thistle. A country name for these birds is thistle-tweaker. Only the males have long and pointed enough beaks to extract the seeds from teasels. These birds love our burdocks when they go to seed.

Chloris chloris is the greenfinch. The name is derived from chloros which is Greek for the yellow-green of spring vegetation. John Clare used to call greenfinches green linnets. Linnets are finches too and I have learnt today that they got their name because they enjoy flax, Linum, seed.
