OH CANADA!

What have you done to Can/US relations?

Canada Day…. her 153rd birthday today.  ( actually it’s 153 years since the Constitution Act of 1867 established her as a country.)
But an appropriate day to record our thoughts  (a mini rant)  about it and it’s border.   Most of you know we have a beloved cabin in BC in the Gulf Islands that we haven’t been allowed to visit for the last 15 months.  But Canada is happy to receive our taxes.  We have good friends there watching over it  and other good blipper friends ….we’ve always felt Canada was friendly and welcoming.   
Then along came covid and the border closing March 21 2020.   Canada doesn’t have any pharmaceutical companies that could manufacture a vaccine so they had dealings early on with China to get their SinoVac.   But that association and those scientists disappeared with many questionable concerns.     (Might be just as well as the SinoVac today is much less effective).   We sent our AstraZeneca and they obtained Pfizer and Moderna and got a late start vaccinating it’s citizens.   Catching up finally, now I just read 30% are fully vaccinated and 77% have received one dose.  )  New guidelines were announced this week. (along with the next months closure to July 21th) Canadian citizens can now reenter Can without quarantining for 14 days if they have been fully vaccinated.  ( what took so long.?). The Public Safety Minister , Bill Blair, says the border won’t open until 75% are fully vaccinated.  No one else says this.  Canadians have been restricted from crossing the land borders for non essential travel but they have been allowed to fly to the USA all along… and drive home.  why is this fair?  Americans are not allowed any entry any way to Can for non essential travel. The border towns are losing huge amounts of business and pressure has  building to open this longest unprotected  border in the world.  We’ve been their best trading partner.  Why not let fully vaccinated people in?   The science would indicate that is safe enough for many other countries .    But I think this is not science but politics.  Prime Minister Trudeau, no friend to the USA since Trump days, is up for reelection this fall and word has it he wants to use the border opening as a big election bonus hoopla,.  But when?   

We love our Canadian island and blipper friends… this blip speaks to the government.  
We didn’t take offense when you had every good reason to be outraged about our government the last 4 years. We did too.   We want to check on our property but we don’t feel welcome!  or that it will be friendly anytime soon.  There are unofficial polls that supposedly tell us most Canadians want to keep Americans out.    Whoever would have thought this?
