Well!

A big day out!  We headed off to Mahey, somewhere north of Blarney first meeting our guides Patsy and John at the Angler's Rest. This is quite a posh pub on the river Lee, just re-opened, and it was packed - people eating enormous plates of stuff at 11am. Patsy had got in touch with me as he knew about a well! I said would you like to show it to me. He said yes and finally we managed to meet up. Fuelled with coffee we went off into the hinterland. Enroute we stopped at  marvellous and ancient churchyard, chockablock with interesting graves. There was a story attached. A priest hunter had killed a priest near here and the locals had exacted their revenge and then killed the priest. The priest was buried in a graveyard but outraged, many of the graves moved to this place instead !  I just loved this angel with one remaining wing. Some nice angels in the church next-door too and a very colourful pub.
Well of the Fair Woman  was duly explored - I had already been to this one but they had earlier cleared the nettles around it so we could actually see something of it. Then on to the next one which I hadn't. A huge amount of land drainage had been going on and we stumbled across the field to see St Mochuda's well, now just a bit of a trickle but it was still there!  We checked with the map. Patsy and John were both very local and knew every blade of grass in the townland, a privilege to learn and see so much and the chat was mighty.
We carried on towards Dripsey in an attempt to find a stone where St Gobnait had knelt leaving her kneeprints - no luck, and then another well where she had stopped- no luck there either but at least they will be recorded.
A grand day out.
