CLASS J27

A rare sight of an ex-P3 steam locomotive on the NYMR. Built from 1906-1923 for the North British Railway, these engines are proper workhorses of the railways in the North East. Under LNER they became Class J27 locos. 65894 was housed in sheds in Sunderland South Dock. Built to cover the Durham coalfield workings, they were re-allocated to York in 1930, mainly seeing use on local goods trains to Scarborough. A proper local lad, who finally retired in 1967.
Extra shows the Repeater, a working Signal allowing a locomotive to leave the platform in Pickering, as the steam engine about turns for the next journey. Permission is granted when the horizontal black line turns to a 450 diagonal.
