Auricular acupuncture

Ive had a bit of auricular acupuncture.

Its not Chinese (although they adopted it) it was the brainchild of Paul Nogier in 1957, he pictured a fetal Homunculus superimposed on the ear.

I'm a scientist at heart so I'm skeptical, not about whether it works as a number of studies have given positive results, but about how it works.

I understand placebo effect but how does that work? Seems even more mysterious!
