A good day to announce bad news

The Scots are travelling hopefully towards a result in the Euros that will see them, if they win, of progressing to the knock out stages of a men’s football competition for the first time ever.

With such optimism at large across Scotland it was, by chance, a good day for our FM to announce that Covid restrictions are not being lifted here anytime soon.

There is an obvious irony in all of this which is that while holidays abroad are currently completely unauthorised by the UK Government, due to the pandemic, thousands of football fans are allowed to congregate, sing shout and carry on regardless.

The PM has set his heart (and popularity) on hosting the Euro football semi finals and final on the fringes of his own Westminster constituency at Wembley. The EU have other thoughts. The rapidity of the spread of the Delta variant of Covid may yet deflect the Euros 2020 finals to Budapest?
