Diary of an Edinburgher

Holidays Day Two

JR went off to the gym this morning before breakfast. I did not. Breakfast was a tick list, which doesn’t sound good, but was - a nice fresh fruit salad was a pleasant surprise. But I must complain about the godawful pervasive MUZAK in every public room. I did ask about it at reception yesterday and she replied that they had to have it ‘for the star rating…’

Bo**ocks! (I didn’t reply)

So we had breakfast to the melodic strains of Diana Ross, Whitney Houston and suchlike screechy warblers.

A sunny morning when we set off to Anglesey. I thought it would be hilly and treesy, but it was rather flat, bare and windswept. We drove along the dual carriageway, which goes straight to Holyhead Ferry. We went to the White Eagle, the gastro pub that Prince William and Kate used to frequent when they lived there. It was mobbed, and though I’d tried to book last tonight, it hadn’t worked, but we got a seat. The place was full of dogs! All sorts.

We had a lovely meal, but JR’s entree deserves special mention (Extra). It was caramelised figs with walnuts, rocket and Perl Las cheese (a Welsh organic blue cheese) and a balsamic reduction. Epic.

Onwards to Caernarfon for a walk round the castle. Not in it, just round it. Then I had the biggest double ice cream ever! We wandered round the wee town while we ate them, then BOOF! I got whacked on the shoulder, and my ice cream disappeared!!! Yes, three big nasty seagulls must have been watching me and swooped in at an opportune moment. I was fair annoyed. But not as annoyed as I would have been had they pooped on me - there did seem to be rather a lot of the stuff around town. Besides, I was almost finished…

We then headed to the hills - that’s what I think of when I think of Wales. We did get a wee bit lost a couple of times and had to double back. These Welsh place names are a mouthful. And the printing on the map in the car seems to have got smaller since the last time we used it. Neither of us, when we took turns to navigate, could read the next town name. ‘Turn off at a place that begins with a P or might be an F and there are a couple of Gs in there…’

But it was fantastic day out. Great roads, not busy. We stopped off at Betws-Y-Coed £1 for 12 hours parking (after 6pm) and had a wee look round the railway station. Unfortunately, all the wee railways are shut for this season.

An excellent day out. We had many many updates (videos and photos) all day from Derek and Archie.
