Meet Allen the peregrine
I was out taking photos of local outdoor sculptures today, for the ArtUK database. The deadline for volunteers to finish gathering together local images is now the end of July, so I'm trying to pick up speed a bit.
So meet Allen, whose roost (is that the right word for a peregrine?) is outside one of the newer University of Sheffield buildings. Nearby is a church that's been converted into a lecture theatre; its tower is the nesting site for a live pair of peregrines, who have raised their young there regularly over the past few years. University staff built a special platform at the top of the tower, to help things along a bit.
And the name...? Allen was created by local sculptor Jason Heppenstall, to mark the opening of a certain Swedish superstore in Sheffield, one in which the allen key is is an essential tool :-)
The extra shows a fuller view. It's a lovely, engaging piece of work, well-suited to its spot.
