Grand Tour of England - Welsh detour - Day 5

We took the 80 mile round trip to see this lovely old castle, still in the Brecon Beacons NP but in Carmarthen. A fellow blipper recommended it. It’s called Carreg Cennen and dates from 12th century. It’s got a dramatic setting on a rocky outcrop with steep drops on all sides. I was tempted to post a photo of that but preferred this atmospheric misty shot. I’m sure Turner must have painted it and he’d have done it proud.

It’s another damp dreich day. No wonder the Welsh singing is so mournful. However all the rain certainly keeps the countryside green. The drive there was so pretty. Rolling tree-covered hills interspersed with small fields bound by hedges. Very Milly Molly Mandy! Or what England might have looked like in the 1950s before agriculture became industrial.

There’s so much to see and Wales is small, yet it takes ages to get anywhere on narrow winding steep roads. The hedges are high and there are few passing places. Driving was easier in the Outer Hebrides. I think we might come back in September if we can’t get to Ireland because of Covid. I suppose it won’t be any wetter than Ireland.
