Lion Rampant

Today's the day ........................ to find

Several interesting things were found by the team on the Tongland Abbey Dig today.

Jenny found the coin above on which I hope you can see a sort of greenish 'lion rampant'?  It was quite small - about 2cms in diameter - and hopefully, when it is cleaned up, it will reveal a bit more about itself.  It's likely to date from the 17th century like the bowl of a clay pipe that she also found today nearby.  That was when the abbey walls were being taken down and the stone blocks used in the construction of other buildings in the area.

Rodger found the piece of mediaeval pottery in extras, near to a completely unexpected drainage channel that he came across today.  And in fact, everyone found something - even if it was just a bit of bone, or an iron nail.

It will all be looked at, cleaned and catalogued - and slowly the picture will build up over the weeks ......................
