Memories of a caterpillar..

..does the butterfly conserve them or does it start every new stage with tabula rasa?

It appears that part of the caterpillar's brain is broken down and rearranged during the metamorphosis, but scientists have found out that the butterflies do conserve some memories from the caterpillar stage (yes they tested the hypothesis with an experiment) which might explain why the butterflies that have a completely different feeding habit compared to the caterpillar will lay the eggs on a plant that the caterpillar (and not the butterfly) will feed on!
Keeping that in mind, I don't know if it would be wise for the butterfly to conserve the memory of the caterpillar feeding on buttercup!
