Lathyrus Odoratus

Large Red

A newly emerged (teneral) Large Red damselfly perches on top of some heather on Ashdown Forest. At about 35mm long it isn't exactly 'large' but the name distinguishes it from the Small Red which really is diminutive. The exoskeleton on this one has yet to harden and get its final colouration, while its wings still have a slightly opaque sheen. I saw quite a few damselflies but only a couple of dragonflies. The latter seem to be particularly late this year.
