Low Sun, Long Shadows
Usually these photos of long shadows are taken in winter, and the sun, whilst low, is at is highest point in the short four-hour day. Partly it’s fun to show just how low the sun is at noon in our part of the world, and partly the photos work well with the snow providing a smoothly lit medium showing shadows so very well. In such pictures the sun is more-or-less directly south.
This picture is in some ways the opposite. It’s taken at around 9 o’clock in the evening. The sun is in the NW and sets at around NNW. The short day of winter is replaced by the short night of summer, a night in which it never actually gets dark. Our neighbour’s lawn provides the smooth media, on which the shadows show.
It was a day of resting and gardening. Apparently driving long distances on 3 out of 4 days, plus doing 3 days of socialising after 18 months of very limited socialising, is all a bit exhausting.
We did eventually get out in the garden, where it is now a race to get the final seeds and plants in so they have time to grow. The promised sunshine arrived but it was still windy and very cold!
