Castle Crag

Writing this retrospectively I can say that this was only day we had wall to wall rain, this was compensated by a very gentle breeze so although we were wet we didn’t feel cold.
A short trek from the slate mine on the Honister Pass took us to the smallest Wainwright, after having done the biggest yesterday.
In some respects this was more of a challenge than Scafell, it’s a short, steep slated path to the top but in the conditions it felt slippy, particularly descending which I did mostly sitting or crouching  down and slithering in a controlled way.
We lunched at the Borrowdale Gates Hotel where they kindly allowed us to eat our Higham  packed lunches in return for buying coffee and home made biscuits. It was a bit of an effort to move and continue to Derwentwater where we walked through fields of Herdwicks and their black lambs, alongside the lake to Portinscale and the minibus, driven by George the gracious and multi skilled Principal.
