Oban's Wee Walks
This morning looked promising so the three of us decided to try one of Oban's Wee Walks, a series of planned walks in and around Oban, put together by a local couple, the lady of the partnership being my dentist.
We began this one by walking along Lonan Drive, a suburban road high up at the south end of the town. It took us through a lovely wee glen, originally a quarry, then a lochan, now a wooded and wild-flowered path much used by local dog-walkers and children, and in spite of being recognised as one of Oban's best in-town green spaces is under huge pressure from developers. At the end of this path there's a track up to the top of the ridge to this view over Oban. Not the greatest view over the town I have to accept, being largely of housing schemes, the new (rather horrible) High School and an industrial estate. Old Oban, the Esplanade and the harbour can be seen in the centre right of the picture.
Once past the houses we wandered over acres of untouched land full of bluebells and wood anemones, under a beautiful blue sky, before eventually returning to earth behind the High School. My cynical side imagines more room for development! The council appears to have little interest in nature and the environment.
Quote of the Day:
Paul McCartney (His last words to wife Linda) – "You're up on your beautiful Appaloosa stallion. It's a fine spring day. We're riding through the woods. The bluebells are all out, and the sky is clear-blue."
