My favourite albums by The Band
The Band was a mainly Canadian rock group in the late sixties and into the seventies, who probably changed the direction of contemporary music. They did it by going against psychedelia and heavy rock, by reaching back to their influences which were rhythm & blues, country, rock'n' roll, gospel, bluegrass and soul. They wrote songs like: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Caledonia Mission and WS Walcott Medicine Show. If I could describe their music, it would be as follows.
If it was a colour it would be brown.
If it was a season, it would be autumn.
If it was tree it would be an oak.
If it was bread, it would be crusty.
If it were a stew, it would be a slow-cooked, rich and heavy.
I am currently reading Robbie Robertson’s biography, Testimony, and for all the hoorahs and accolades, this is the story of a brotherhood that fell apart. Very sad. But without The Band their wouldn't be Mumford & Sons and a host of others. If you don't believe me, watch this. And if you are not smiling by the end, there's something wrong with you.
