Oysterville

Founded in 1854 there is a wonderful little community, )now a National  heritage site, ) of some of the original homes on this sandspit.   The industry was oysters.  there are huge piles of oyster shells here.    The church is typical of the architecture, ...big houses with wonderful gardens.   We also walked along the lovely boardwalk in Long Beach where I learned that this whole peninsula is a sandspit with sand made from pumice from Volcanic eruptions of Mt St Helens, which were washed down the Columbia River and pushed by currant and wind to the north.   Amazing.  It is boasted as the World’s longest beach.   (28 miles of beautiful sand.)   Explored by Lewis and Clark in 1805, they recorded seeing parts of gray whales washed up.  It is the route the grey whales take from summer in Alaska to winter in Baja and back.  (extra)

So I’m happy I got my Ocean Fix.  Short but lovely.     We decided to avoid the freeway on the way home and take the Bremerton ferry into Seattle.  The bad news is we just missed one so had to wait an hour.  The good news is we were first in line so I got to take photos from the comfy non windy carseat (thru dirty window)  and altho I had much closer photos I liked this from farther away as you can appreciate the Cascade Mountains behind Seattle.  (2nd extra)
