Cicada ghost
My fist sighting of an empty shell of the 17-yr cicada brood. Over the next 3-4 weeks, the mid Atlantic states will see billions (yes, billions!) of the critters emerge from their 17-yr slumber underground where they fed on tree sap. Their only purpose is to reproduce. Then they die and the larvae go underground for the next 17 years. What a life, eh?
I remember the last time around. Their song (as they search for a mate) is deafening. Their empty shells and dead bodies crunch under foot. Pets, esp dogs, feast on them. I’m hoping to get a bunch of interesting pix of these alien looking creatures when we return from a week-long trip to Colorado. :)
