Wanderings & Witterings

Chestnut

Back at Camelon Parish Church this morning to lead worship and then after lunch, realising that yesterday's rain seemed to have abated, drove over to Denny to do a circular walk around the town. The plan was to combine some of the routes listed in a booklet produced by Falkirk Council and make a circuit of the town centre, taking in the main points of interest.

First stop was the car park behind the Town House. This is where I blipped the avenue of cherry trees two weeks ago. I have posted another taken today as one of my extras.

My walk took me through an industrial estate and down to the River Carron, which I followed for a while as it looped back into the town centre. Crossing the main road at Denny Bridge I walked up into Herbertshire Castle Park. The castle hasn't been here for some time, but one survivor of those times is what's known locally as the Spanish Chestnut Tree (main photo and an extra). Where it sits used to be in the grounds of the castle estate.

The tree is actually a Sweet Chestnut but has been verified to be between 300-400 years old. A local gardener and historian has been able to plant a sapling from the tree - let's hope it has room to grow and can live as long as its parent!

From there it was a relatively short walk back to the car. My round trip on foot was about three miles. Just glad to be out and about after yesterday's sedentary day.
