New monument

Up until a couple of weeks ago, WW1 has the smallest monument of all war memorials in Washington DC - a little pavilion that is lost amidst the majestic memorials that surround it.  That's changed now with the opening of a new space dedicated to the "forgotten war."  It's a wide open space with lots of water surfaces, sunken places to sit and reflect (pun intended) and one major sculpture that is still being worked on and not due to be delivered until 2024.  It's depicted on my pic above: right now, just a tapestry that is life-size and represents what the sculpture will be.

It's a bit nondescript to my taste but that may change once it's finalized and the landscaping grows mature.

I hadn't realized that the US only participated in that war for a bit over the last 18 months of the war. It seems that its biggest contribution was to bring over the 1918 flu that decimated so many people across the world.  Why it was called the Spanish Flu is a mystery to me...
