The Woodland Garden (Wednesday 21st April 2021)
Although a rare and special sight now in the wild the snake's-head fritillary (fritillaria meleagris) used to be commonly found in water meadows such as those by the Thames, where they were collected and sold for a penny or two.
I have attempted before to grow them in the Woodland Garden but they usually disappear after their first year. I tried again recently and although some only came up once, the ones that did seem to have spread. I found this one today to my delight - it had had sprung up in front of the large polyanthus primula bunch that I have blipped before, some way away from any I had planted. I am pleased to submit it for Wildflower Week, with thanks to Miranda1008 for hosting.
I didn't take any pictures during last week's productive gardening morning with Refna but I did take a few today, before, during and after her visit. She was excited to have just acquired an allotment having been on the waiting list for over two years. There was a team of landscape gardeners at work over the fence and the Leaf Blower Man was doing his worst in the garden beyond that.
