St Olan's Holy Well
Cheating appallingly today but Jeano (check out her PINK coat) has just informed me it's International Sites & Monuments Day, so really you have to get one of my favourite monuments in County Cork - actually there are two of them. Here you have St Olan's Well with accompanying sacred tree! The tree sprung up when St Olan was having a snooze from minding cattle and stuck his staff in the ground - well and tree springing up. The tree had curing powers as well as the well, and pilgrims would take home small sticks. This must be the great great grandchild of the original! In front of the well is a mighty standing stone, possibly not in its original position, but down one side it has an Ogham inscription - Ogham being the earliest Irish alphabet, and in the middle a large cross has been inscribed. There is one group of scholars who believe St Olan was an Egyptian, an early Coptic monk, but I reckon he was pure Cork. Do you remember I was contacted by a Russian student in St Petersburg (catch up) well this is the well. St Olan had a rather unsaintly side to him too:
St Olan and St Lachtáin were very great friends until a certain thing happened. Both agreed that what each would walk on the morrow would be his parish. However, Lachtáin by setting out when it was still dark covered more ground than St Olan and people say that the reason why Donaghmore parish is bigger than Aghabullogue. Both saints cursed each others parishes. St Olan said all the mad dogs would run towards Donaghmore and St Lachtain said that Aghabullogue would never be without robbers.
St Olan would be furious to know St Lachteen still has many more wells than him! Not sure about the mad dogs and robbers situation.
Another perfect well in the extra, just because. By the way, did you know I liked holy wells???
