Mitre Rock

Because we got a really good start from Adelaide this morning, we granted ourselves a little side trip. So we took a back road through to Stawell on our way to Melbourne. This took us very close to Mount Arapiles, which is a rock formation that rises about 140 metres above the Wimmera plains in western Victoria.

It is part of the Mount Arapiles-Tooan State Park. Arapiles is a very popular destination for rock climbers due to the quantity and quality of climbs. It is one of the premier climbing sites in Australia along with the nearby Grampians.

Mitre Rock is an isolated outcrop to the north of Arapiles, and we certainly had never seen it or heard of it before.

In my opinion it looks like an old volcanic plug which reminded me of Ship Rock (but much. much smaller) in New Mexico.

Spot the climber.
