Putting the lock into lockdown

We - TSM, The Dizzle and I - did a ten mile cycle ride along the Basingstoke canal, Wey and finally the Thames today, passing through some lovely country along the way. This lock at New Haw dates from 1653 although I think the ‘keepers cottage is probably late eighteenth century.

At Byfleet some men were shoring up the embankment which involved getting down and dirty into the canal itself, and putting in new steels. They seemed cheerful despite the fact that it must have been cold and messy, even with the full wading suits on. I even got a thumbs up (see extra).

We had a very late lunch (or early dinner) when we got back, having put our bikes on the train at Walton. The weather was good enough to eat out in the garden and play cards afterwards.

Went up to Epsom for the vaccination part 2 tonight. Nice chat with a colleague who was volunteering on site, she even gave me a sticker. Hopefully there won’t be any side effects.

Good day.
