Today there were a few cows grazing behind the gorse but no signs of the many horses that would have been near this large stable over 400 years ago.  People are surprised to find that this was not a chapel but a large stable for Crichton Castle which I have blipped before in my Mary Queen of Scots series. The ground floor housed stalls for the horses with a hayloft and living quarters for those looking after the horses and a horseshoe shaped window above the door.  Mary would have had her horses attended to at the stables when she visited although the stables were improved when the castle was remodelled in the 1580s a few years after her visit.  The castle must have been impressive then and I will revisit when Historic Scotland are able to reopen their buildings as it has some interesting features inside.
