Apparently, there are over 16,000 commercial jets, (out of a total of about 22,000), parked in various spots around the world. We watched a fascinating documentary about the amount of preventive maintenance that has to be done on an ongoing basis just to keep them in a condition to bring them back into service at some point. It seems that you just can't park them up and then turn them on again a few months later.
It brought fresh appreciation of the background work that I never even imagined when I'm sitting in 23A.
