It's A Personal Thing
Despite criticism from some parts about the glorification of war, each year the Falmouth Branch of the Royal Naval Association selects twenty conflicts from a list proposed by its members that will be commemorated on the appropriate dates. First up this year is Op Telic, the war in Iraq and its aftermath.
These single Acts of Remembrance are rarely well attended and the pandemic has curtailed the numbers even further. Today it was just Steve Martin, a Coldstream Guards Veteran, and myself meeting in the park for a coffee before a simple laying of the cross.
Next up is the ‘Greatest Raid Of All’, the St Nazaire Raid commemoration, because the raiders left from, and returned to, Falmouth it is a civic event moved to April 18 this year to allow fifteen to attend.
Some of these commemorations are personal to individuals, some resonate with the public. 11 November 2018, the centenary of the ending of WWI, saw a good sized crowd gather for the Remembrance Service yet 2019’s was the biggest ever in Falmouth with a crowd estimated at over 1200 in Kimberley Park.
The weekly garage coffee and cake with Richard and Jax before home and what should be a bumper weekend of rugby.
Things don’t look good for England and by the end of Saturday I suspect it will be a ‘Triple Frown Crown.
