Bamboozle

A hazy sunny day spent at Trebah Gardens.
We went there to see the Spring flowering trees, but this bamboo really caught my eye.
They have 40 different varieties.
The thickest cane recorded here, was 29cm in circumference.
Specimens at Trebah do regularly reach 10m tall in just one growing season.

From the house there is a wonderful view down through the valley gardens to the Helford river.

You walk through tree ferns, Huge palm trees,One of the tallest magnolias in Cornwall, which is now at it's best. Covered in beautiful pink flowers.
Tall rhododendrons, in shades of cream, pink, and red.
The path winds down through the giant gunnera which is just begining to sprout.
Gunnera manicata from Brazil will grow to 16ft in high Summer and the leaves to 8ft across.

Eventually you reach the small beach.
This beach was covered in concrete in 1944. From it the American 29th Infantry
Division ( 7500 men) embarked for the assault landing on Omaha Beach on D.Day
We had the place to ourselves. It was nice to sit a while, in such a beautiful spot, looking out to sea, and remember all those who never returned..

Then back through the gardens, up the valley, and to the cafe for lunch.
We both had the beef burgers, salad and chips. (Local beef, and no horse in sight!!)
Lovely food, and what a great building.

On the way out I bought a book about the garden, and another one "Cornwalls Great Gardens" Some wonderful photos.
Then bought some lovely wind chimes. (Will blip these when we get home!)
Resisted buying any plants, though they were very tempting! ( Awkward to get home.)

We had a drive round some lovely little villages on the way back.
Glad there wasn't much traffic, mostly single track roads!
Just one little old lady who came within inches of hiting us as she wized round a corner!
So got back in one piece!
