Watsons Bay to Bondi
A hot sunny afternoon walk from Watsons Bay along cliff tops, around bays and finally some streets, to Bondi - part of the new 80 km Bondi to Manly walk. Today’s section was about 10 km.
The photos start at the finish line with the view from Bondi Icebergs, so named because people swim here year-round; the beach; a viewfinder at Dover Heights to distract people planning to clamber over the fence to look down (that’s the ocean crashing onto the rocks below); and finally Macquarie Lighthouse, built in 1790.
We’d started at The Gap, a notorious suicide spot, where Don Ritchie, an insurance salesman who lived opposite, is memorialised for saving at least 160 and possibly as many 400 people over 45 years. He’d cross the road, ask the person if he could help in some way and invite them back to his home for a cup of tea and a chat.
“Always remember the power of a simple smile, a helping hand, a listening ear, and a kind word.” - Don Ritchie (1926-2012)
Have a great Sunday.
