Lockdown quilting
Lockdown quilting
A huge part of my lockdown experience has revolved around finishing a quilt that I started 25 years ago for my eldest son who was then 11: he's now 36. I got stuck on the quilting design, got bored with it and couldn't decide what to do with it until a chat a couple of years ago with a close friend who is a magnificent quilter. I realised I could make its story part of the surface design. Then came the pandemic and it became apparent that I'd have to incorporate the words and phrases we've got used to onto the surface too. So here it is, still unfinished but very close now. It's hard to photograph because of light pinging off the deep colours but these images are decent enough.
I'm excited about working on it as it's become a tangible record of 2020/21. I've also been contributing to a PhD student's project to record crafting during lockdown. It's been motivating and revealing to detail my progress in a sewing diary for the project and I couldn't leave it out of my own photographic journal.
