Diary of an Edinburgher

By LadyMarchmont

After JR’s morning fitness session, we decided to go somewhere different... Yes! We went across town by bus and had a walk though Stockbridge! JR and Archie would have walked both ways, but there was no way I could do that. Anyway, I enjoyed the bus ride, which only had a few folk in both ways.

We walked along Circus Lane first as JR had not been there. Then we walked right along to the new (still empty) shops. There were many cafes selling their tempting wares as takeaways. All of them had queues.

That was enough of a walk for me, so I took the bus home, while the others walked all the way (over 10,000 steps).

When I came out of our corner shop, I met a wee girl (about 7 or 8) and her mum, and they were picking up rubbish. I congratulated them - they’d been doing it for an hour. There is litter everywhere, the bins are full and haven’t been emptied, so people just put their rubbish bags down beside the full bin, it’s ripped open and scattered far and wide in the wind. We always pick up several bits as we pass, but the wee girl inspired me to go home, get my grabber and a bag, and do a bit myself. I have always intended to do this. I filled three shopping bags full in a matter of minutes, but there was only one bin (out of three) that had any space. When I came home I wrote a very snippy letter of complaint to all four of my councillors. Surely it’s not too much to ask that bins are emptied regularly.
