It's John Steinbeck Day!

It isn't really, I just made that up, but maybe we should have a John Steinbeck Day. He's probably my favourite writer, and certainly my favourite writer of short stories. (Three of these books are short story collections.) When he writes about the farmers and even the layabouts around Monterey, he brings their world right to you. Of course 'The Grapes of Wrath' has become his big novel, and it is a scathing attack on American capitalism, but I've only ever read it once. It is his short stories that I keep coming back to.
