The Signal

The restored Plym Valley Railway runs for 1.5m from Marsh Mills to Plym Bridge. This shot taken today shows a distant signal on the single-track line, which runs through a wooded valley. A distant signal gives the driver advance warning that the stop signal ahead may be displaying 'danger'. On sighting the 'caution' aspect (as shown here), the driver must prepare to stop at the signal ahead. If the distant signal shows a 'clear' aspect (signal pointing down), the train may maintain full speed. Despite there being no trains at the moment, the distant caution signal seemed strangely apt for the times we currently live in!
