Bellevue

A day of meetings but as I walked home I was able to enjoy the last of the rays of sunshine - their low angle casting long shadows across the roads and pavements and turning the sandstone buildings of the new town a stunning golden colour. By the time I got to the centre of town the magic had disappeared - the tall buildings blocking out the sunshine - it seemed dark and cold in comparison - a different world.

This picture is of Bellevue Terrace, built in the Georgian period, its sand stone, like most of Edinburgh's new town, came from Craigleith Quarry. This was the largest and most well known of Edinburgh's quarries - it exported sand stone all over the world and was active for over 300 years.
