Neidpath Castle

This is Neidpath Castle which sits on the western edge of Peebles on the banks of the River Tweed. The current building dates from the 1300s and looks quite dramatic as you pass beneath it. The castle itself commands an amazing view of the river and surrounding hills.

Like all castles it is reported to be haunted. This one by Jean Douglas - referred to as the 'Maid of Neidpath' by Sir Walter Scott - who was forbidden to marry the son of a laird who was regarded as 'below her station'. It is said she dwindled away and died of a broken heart and that she is seen in the castle wearing a long brown dress with a white collar.

That's enough scary stuff for one weekend - I am still recovering from watching 'Dancing on the Edge' last night - which left me so spooked I nearly had to call for back up to walk across the dark garden to the garage to put something in the freezer!
