Sycamore Gap

Named after a lone sycamore tree (well it wouldn't be named after an ash tree would it!). Sycamore Gap is on the route of Hadrian's Wall between Milecastles 38/39. It's unlikely that there was a tree there 2000 years ago but it is now a famous landmark on the Wall Trail. If you look closely you may notice a stone wall in front of the tree, this protects a replacement tree in the event of this one being blown down by the gales that howl through there. The Wall is visible running down the hill and through the gap. Nearby on the north facing side of the wall there is a Roman swastica carved in the stone, possibly in tribute to their God Jupiter.
