Pink coat

A lovely day was forecast, so we went on an 'essential' journey to buy cheese and where else to buy cheese from but The Cheese Shop at Settle. We tasted and bought - rather a lot. A great place. Then we decided to look up a few of the stations that were on the Little North Western Railway line. 

This is Clapham Station. It opened in 1849 and was on the LNWR route between Skipton and Ingleton. It was closed and opened, closed and opened, as the Railway Companies fell out and changed routes. Now it is a working station on the Bentham Line, which links Leeds and Lancaster/Morecambe and serves lots of places along the way.

The Station was built in a black and white mock-Tudor style and is now a private house. Each platform had a substantial shelter built for passengers as they waited for trains. This one is now a Grade II listed building. The original wooden bridge was replaced in the 1950s with this steel structure. In Extras I have added a photo of the five-tiered ,viaduct which takes the railway over the River Wenning just as it leaves the station (see map). This was the 11.20 train to Leeds - presumably the lady in the pink coat was on it.

We went into Settle and were amused as we thought of how the road from Bradford to Cumbria used to go through the town and up the hill on the other side - before the Settle bypass was built. It was not easy. 

We also found excellent fish and chips in Settle - some of the best ever, freshly made and delicious. Well, this was Yorkshire, where they know how to do fish and chips!
