Gorbal Boys
A walk to Govanhill this morning to get the flu jag (much more onomatopoeic than the english jab) and a great opportunity to explore a bit more of the Southside. On route I spotted a possible new hairdresser (unlikely I will deviate from my excellent current one in Shawlands) called Just Williams, without the apostrophe. The queue just after 9 was only about 6 deep and I was in and out very quickly, all very well organised. The drizzle had all but stopped and I decided to find the Gorbals Boys sculpture which was only a mile or so away in Queen Elizabeth Gardens – which is today’s blip. They are of course based on the famous 1960s photograph showing three young lads playing in the street wearing their mothers’ high heels. The image was recreated in 2008 by Liz Peden who lives and works in the Gorbals.
The extra blip is the astonishing ton and a half-suspended sculpture The Gatekeeper which flies over a photograph rendered on reinforced glass. What an amazing way to come and go from your tenement block every day.
