MYSTERY FLOWER FRIDAY
Forget what you know about the seasons when flowers bloom, because the world has gone mad. Guess what flower this is.
.
Here are some hints:
-it is a woody, deciduous scrub,
-it usually flowers in early summer
-the flowers can be lavender or deep purple, pink or white
-the flowers have a heavenly scent
-this shrub is often plagued by powdery mildew
-in Minnesota, they are planted as tall hedges in the freeway medians.
making for a glorious sight!
-this photo was taken today in California, but they are not common here.
I found this blooming in a garden dedicated to this flowering shrub.
Since I could not believe it could be blooming in late November, I
smelled it & knew it is a LILAC BUSH.
It was the only cluster of tiny flowers on the bush. Almost all the leaves have fallen off. The scent was intoxicating. What a nice surprise!
I will go back in the Spring to see it in full bloom.
PS: LILAC thrives in Minnesota, where they have brutal winters, but
I rarely see them here in sunny California. Its a mystery....
