Atrophied

It's not often I can remember the first time I came across a particular word. I do remember where I first read the word 'atrophied', though; it was in an episode of 'The Uncanny X-Men' in Marvel comics. Cyclops said that his powers were "atrophying".

If you say it outloud, it's almost onomatopoeic. Almost. Either way, it's one of my favoruite words, one of those where, when it's appropriate, nothing else will really do.

I thought of it today when I saw this post on a fence just outside Endmoor: the Minx was driving and we'd just been across to the office in Kendal to pick up some bits and pieces.

This is no visual synecdoche for Endmoor itself, mind you, which is undergoing a sudden expansion with a whole new housing estate rapidly sprouting on its northern edge.
