Beast Market
On one of my regular trips to Huddersfield, to do my Dad's shopping, I spotted the sign for the Beast Market, a name that made me wonder. Prosaically, it is nothing more than an early name for the cattle market, formerly held in that part of the town.
Two not so enjoyable moments today were a dental appointment (no details required) and an encounter whilst queuing to pay in Sainsbury's. I was standing about half a metre to the right of the sign on the floor showing, with an image of two feet, where one should wait. The woman ahead of me insisted, without apparent irony or humour, that I had to stand directly on the sign. I was tempted to use geometry to prove that standing beside but to the left or right of the sign took me further away from herself than would be the case standing on it. (Square on the hypotenuse and all that.) Instead, I replied with a dismissive "Pffff" sound, largely muted by my mask.
In better news, the tyres on my car don't need to be replaced (yet.)
