Faraday’s House at Hampton Court
L2 Day 5 - cycled round the local area and to Hampton Court to find the house Michael Faraday lived in from 1958-1867. Faraday(1791-1867) is famous for his discoveries around electromagnetism and the electric motor. I was alerted to this house by an article in a Saturday newspaper showing it for sale, for £1.95m! So I decided to go and take a look. The house needs work, is by the Hampton Court roundabout very near the house Christopher Wren lived in, and the garden at the rear now has no view of the Thames ( although I think it would have done when built)! So although it was probably lovely in the 19C not so desirable now. He lived in this Grace and favour house until his death. The house was then called the Master Mason’s House but was renamed Faraday House. (See the extra) The official plaque for Faraday in the blip was erected in 1886 by the Roysl Society of Arts at 48 Blandford Street, Marylebone. There is a carved stone over the front door, on the outside of the house. I have passed this house many many times but have never noticed it from the road.
