Aim high.......
This little man is standing beside a boy's dream. A real Spitfire out in the open and accessible. "A real fighter aircraft Grandpa!"
Delighted, happy, enthralled, frozen by the easterly wind howling over Newquay airport. Amazed that Grandpa used to do some of his instrument training at Newquay, he has no idea what I was yattering about just that I have a link to the field.
Story - possibly already told.
Aged 9 or 10 sitting in the senior class at junior school working away; the teacher was Mr Tuggy, who nowadays reminds me of the headmaster "Chalkie" in the Giles cartoons. My mind strayed, I watched an aeroplane pass overhead, I sensed Mr Tuggy hovering, he was no mean hand with a ruler or cane.
I looked up, pointed at the plane and asked, "Sir, how do they do that?"
For once he held his normal self in check, perhaps recognising an enquiring mind and answered, "Never mind now, one day you will understand - now back to your work."
I was and remain grateful for his tolerance. I'm impatient, yet he held back and allowed me to express myself; I did learn, I wonder if my little man will follow me. I won't forget Mr Tuggy's kindness on that summers day. .
