Creel

Arbroath is a small working fishing port, famous for its smokies - smoked haddock, one of which I devoured at lunchtime. The harbour is full of interest, with some fine old buildings, plenty of boats and piles of creels, the baskets in which fish are transported and used to catch lobsters, crabs etc.

For those who like football and enjoy a good superlative, Arbroath FC's ground - Gayfield Park - is the closest to the sea in the UK (some say, in Europe.) According to Wikipedia: "The current ground is a traditional style ground exposed to the elements, where the traditions of 'real football' are still observed where opposition fans mix as they change ends at half time to stand behind the goal their side is facing. There is terracing on three sides and enclosed stands on all four sides. On stormy winter days, waves beat on the walls surrounding the ground."

Later we drove up to Montrose, visiting on the way the Montrose Basin Visitor Centre, which has good views across the massive tidal basin. The town centre has a few good statues and rows of characterful shops..
