Bulkhead clock

Quarantine day 4

This was one of the clocks I repaired this morning, a bulkhead clock made by Smiths probably around 1930. Smiths were a major manufacture of clocks up till around 1970. This clock is of particularly good quality and there is no reason why the mechanism should not last for another hundred years. It may or may not have spent some of its life at sea. Obviously it has a platform escapement and not a pendulum. In the 18th century George Harrison built several sea clocks in his attempt to win the prize for solving the problem of determining longitude at sea. They all had pendulums but eventually he designed an accurate pocket watch which finally won the prize and dispensed with the need for a pendulum on a moving vessel. The clocks and the watch can be seen at the Greenwich Maritime Museum.Quarantine day for
