The Grandest Canal entrance in the UK!
I know you realised that! Yes this is the magnificent classical and Georgian style entrance to the Sapperton tunnel in the middle of the canal linking the Thames and Severn . Built in late 1700's it was 3.5 K long and at that time the longest ever built. It closed in 1911.
There have been multiple attempts to reopen this lovely canal in glorious cotswold countryside but I suspect, sadly, it won't happen but id love to be proved wrong.
My consolation today was to call in the the Daneway for a welcome pint, see extra. This was formerly the Bricklayers, who built the tunnel, and three cottages that housed the Leggers for the barges.
I lived around here many years ago and enjoyed the history of this area.
