Holiday Day Two
After a hearty breakfast (a vegetarian fry-up for me) we unpacked the bikes, ready for OFF! We had asked hotel staff about the track along the river, part of the Deeside Way. But we weren’t too sure how to get on to it. About three minutes into our ride, we stopped at this cafe a) for a coffee, and b) to double check the route and c) to use their toilet. We had come to a main road, so we were unsure. I must say, the bikes attract quite a bit of interest when we stop.
Once on the correct path, we cycled along, without incident, for about 40 minutes. And it was most pleasant - the River Dee beside us, and not many other users. I like people who hold on to their dog, and ones who step right off the path till we pass.
We arrived at a small settlement of shops - a gallery, a restaurant. And there was a sign for the footpath to Crathes Castle. We double checked this, as we had to go under the main road, but arrived at the castle gates. What a beautiful ride in - lovely wide, flat road, with no cars, and huge big old trees all around.
We’ve been to Crathes Castle years ago, but it’s well worth many visits. As we’ve no locks for the bikes, we took turns to either sit in the sun or walk around the fabulous gardens (spot JR and the bikes in the top photo). The famous yews were planted in 1702!
I must say, I felt a bit more relaxed on the way home, because we knew the way. At times, the path was very narrow, but you could see far ahead and anticipate any hazards. I’m getting a lot better at starting off, but stopping is still hazardous. Bikes were packed away easily and they’re the best yet - as stable as anything.
A wee rest was needed before we set off to see the nearby Falls of Feugh, which was a half hour walk. We stood there for ages, watching the salmon trying to leap up the raging water. A futile task, I fear, poor wee things - some were tiddlers. And none of them made it while we were there.
I came back to the hotel to rest again (13,328 steps!!) while JR walked into town to get some fruit.
Another busy day planned for tomorrow - yes, involving the bikes. This area is just fantastic for bikers, even feeble ones like us.
PS Archie has walked about 10km today.
