This well known landmark is the Italiante style water tower which is part of the derelict Garnett's Cabinet Works which lies between Cairo Street and Barbauld Street Warrington and is within a conservation area.

It was built by Robert Garnett, cabinetmaker, who was a local benefactor to many churches and charities.

The derelict building and entrance in the foreground was the Sunday School of the adjoining Unitarian Church.

The current owners, property developers, bought the site in 2005 and they gained planning permission for the redevelopment of the site into retail, leisure and office space. However they were unable to find any companies interested in taking the property on and that planning permission lapsed.

They failed in April 2011 to gain permission to demolish the building, including the tower, and turn it into a temporary car park.

Who knows what the future will hold for this building.

Edit: After posting I found this quote from a councillor at the meeting which unanimously voted against the planning request to pull the buildings down.

Clr Geoff Settle (LAB - Poulton North) said: "I don't want to be looking back in 12 months time only to be quoting the words of Joni Mitchell saying 'don't it always seem to be you don't know what you've got till its gone. They paved paradise and put up a parking lot'."/i]
